Citizenship

A citizen of the United States is a native-born, foreign-born, or naturalized person who owes allegiance to the United States and who is entitled to its protection. As a U.S. citizen, you get unique rights and privileges which include the right to vote, having a U.S. passport, the U.S. government's protection when abroad and the right to petition for permanent residency (green cards) for your children and close relatives. The United States recognizes U.S. citizenship of individuals by birth, by blood, or by naturalization.

U.S. Citizenship by Birth
The United States guarantees citizenship at birth to almost all individuals born in the U.S. or in U.S. jurisdictions. (Certain individuals born in the United States, such as children of foreign heads of state or children of foreign diplomats, do not obtain U.S. citizenship).

U.S. Citizenship of Foreign-Born
The United States recognizes citizenship of certain individuals born outside the U.S. to parents who are U.S. citizens. This is based on the principle that holds that the country of citizenship of a child is the same as that of his or her parents.

Naturalization
Naturalization is the process by which U.S. citizenship is conferred upon a foreign citizen or national.
